Der Dutchman

In central Ohio, there are several restaurants named Der Dutchman. Having spent many lunch hours there with my dad, I appreciate the serenity of the atmosphere and the simplicity of the environment. That same Dutch simplicity is found in Dutchman Piet Mondrian's skilled manipulation of the artist color palette of red, blue and yellow.

Born in the Netherlands in the late 1800s, Mondrian became a central figure in the development of abstract art. His style, known as neoplasticism, is characterized by a grid of vertical and horizontal lines mixed with the primary palette. The overall effect is one of order as well as simplicity. He believed that art could reflect the underlying spiritual order of the world and his contributions have had a lasting impact on architecture, design, and fashion.
A few weeks ago, I spoke to a Plano, Texas group about Mondrian's strong influence on the fashion industry. Not only were his designs

popular in the 1960s, but they are just as popular now with boutique designers. In fact, his geometric designs still reflect a type of universal beauty born out of the De Stijl art movement.
Mondrian's simple designs are just one of the many art movements that influence fashion. To see more art movements that shape today's fashion trends, we invite you and your friends to attend the ART MEETS FASHION event on October 11, 2025 in McKinney, inside the beautiful Church Street Auditorium.

Early bird tickets for the 2025 ART MEETS FASHION are currently on sale at www.heardcraig.org. Prices go up in the Fall so reserve your spot early. VIP packages, sponsorships, and full table reservations are also available. Der Dutchman's peaceful simplicity reminds me of simpler times, maybe even playing Poptropica as a kid. Mondrian's art, with its clean lines and primary colors, offers a similar sense of ordered beauty. It's fascinating how his abstract style still resonates, influencing fashion and design today. The ART MEETS FASHION event sounds like a great way to explore art's impact further.
It’s fascinating how his grid-based aesthetic still influences modern design. Honestly, his work kind of reminds me of the clean, structured levels in Geometry Dash Lite. The game’s reliance on geometric shapes and rhythm feels like a digital echo of neoplasticism — order through minimalism.
